COVID-19 Public Health Emergency Extended

As officials brace for a spike in COVID-19 cases this winter, the federal government has extended the COVID-19 public health emergency through January 11. First declared in January 2020 and renewed every 90 days since, the public health emergency has drastically changed how health services are delivered.

This declaration enables the emergency authorization of vaccines, testing and treatments for free. It also expands Medicaid coverage to millions of people, many of whom will risk losing that coverage when the emergency concludes. Lastly, it temporarily opens up telehealth access for Medicare recipients, enabling doctors to collect the same rates for those visits.

The federal government has said it will provide 60 days notice before it puts an end to the public health emergency.

Longitudinal Changes in Breast Density Could Be Linked to Breast Cancer Risk

According to a new work published in Radiology, a baseline breast density assessment could serve as a longitudinal tool for evaluating breast cancer risk as women age. The study analyzed more than 2 million women with multiple screening mammograms.

Regular preventive care visits to a healthcare provider have been shown to reduce the risk of diseases, disabilities and death. Not only do they improve overall health, but they also help identify potential life-threatening problems earlier. At TPSC, our self-funded benefit plans come with many preventive care services at zero cost to members. We take pride in protecting our members and getting them the care they need. Our reporting even comes with preventive care screening data!

Recently, the U.S. Supreme Court reversed the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals decision on discrimination against patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The Court found that the plaintiff hospital health plan did not discriminate against patients with ESRD by paying less for dialysis than other treatments. The reason behind the ruling was that the court found that the plan provides the same coverage uniformly for all kidney-care patients.

We’ve partnered with Renalogic, an industry leader in dialysis cost containment, to bring a payment allowance methodology solution to address the high cost of outpatient dialysis claims that confirms with this recent ruling.
